Openly gay skating analyzer Johnny Weir drew the ire of some members of the LGBT community when this person refused to boycott the winter Olympic games, but his Hunger Games inspired the Sochi couture -- along with his spot-on commentary and refusal to do anything but his work -- has proved to be the perfect way to “stick it” to Vladimir Putin and also his oppressive regime.

To become fair, Johnny absolutely must not have called the persons boycotting this Olympic games “idiots” -- since the only idiots upon board here are the ones back the Russian law that forbids gay people from staying near children. It is absurd. But Johnny is the former Olympic skater and also current figure skating commentator, so his decision to settle on to continue to carry out his freaking job despite facing the threat of jail time and also physical violence is an admirable one.

“I risk jail time exactly going there, but the Olympics are certainly not the place to create a political statement, ” he informed The NY Times. “I am not a politician and I don't really talk about politics. You do not need to agree with this politics, but you've to respect the culture of any country you are browsing. ”

Basically, instead of shrinking far away from his many hateful the Russian dissenters, Johnny decided to appear and be the best himself he could possibly be. And Johnny has completely respected the state he’s visiting -- but by himself terms. He is been perfectly adroit and professional in terms of his on-air performance, while refusing to ditch the flamboyant threads which he loves.

“I decided to search more of Stanley Tucci’s character through the Hunger Games, ” Weir told Philadelphia Mag. “I am trying to stay between which lines of Johnny on Skating with all the Stars and all of those other NBC men’s family within Brooks Brothers. ”

So although Johnny isn’t protesting this Olympics, he is absolutely creating a statement -- “I am right here, I am queer, I seem fabulous in vintage Chanel, get accustomed to it. ” Is Putin (not to cover the millions of Russians that support the law) blessed about Weir’s sartorial selections? Probably not, but I’m zero mind reader. But what is he going to do about it? Arrest Weir for wearing stockings? It’s easy to discipline and condemn violent or maybe “troublesome” protesters, so sometimes the ultimate way to make a statement should be to just bravely be who you are, despite the madness that’s taking around you. I’m not saying in which active protesting is never the best option, but in this event, Johnny -- and Elton -- formed the right choice.

“I’m not trying being funny here, but Elton John got in and away from Russia for a representation recently, ” Johnny instructed Philly Mag. “And this individual dedicated his entire concert, very bravely, to a little gay man in Russia who lost his life recently by the beating. So I think that problem here is more what’s about to happen to that Russian community (than to me). ”

In summary, Weir knows all too well the hatred and violence toward gays in Russia is an issue. But maybe -- simply maybe -- his decision to adhere to his guns will show to be one small step within a positive direction.
