That doesn't mean that Alabama won't ever win a national champion, or even that it will be a long time ahead of they do. The smart money can be on Nick Saban winning a minumum of one more before he leaves the Tuscaloosa.
But the period when Alabama towered within the college football landscape, when it lost five games during four years, when its name began to carry the same undertones inside college football that names such as Yankees and Patriots have sometimes held in their respective sports -- that time period is over. Alabama is currently is just another college-football team. A very outstanding team -- one of the best. Just not one that seems amazing.
We knew it might happen, of course. Dynasties inside sports don't last eternally. Despite all the accomplishment the Patriots have had in recent years in the NFL, they may be not seen as the identical team that they have been from 2001 to 2004, after they won three Super Dishes.
